magical dragons

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Two of my sweet friends and I had a much needed girls day today. You know what stinks about growing up? You have to get this thing called a "job," and "jobs" really get in the way of your social life. And sometimes, you have to take these things called "summer classes," where they make you sit in a hot, sticky building and listen to someone talk about things like Oedipus Rex for three hours straight. And the kid next to you coughs on your s'mores pop tarts, which just happened to be your supper because your family was out of town and you forgot to eat real food. That kind of stuff gets in the way of your social life, too. You basically turn into a robot that sleeps, eats, works, and writes papers or whatever. SO, when your lovely friends say "LET'S GET TOGETHER" you respond with a hearty "DUH I'LL BE THERE." And you eat at Cracker Barrel and go downtown and take pictures and go to Hot 'n Cold and get coconut creme iced teas and go to the dragon park and take more pictures. (Sneak in alleys and climb giant mosaic dragons at your
own risk.) Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Also, wearing a sundress is not mandatory, but highly advised. This is the South. There's this thing called "humidity" and it's a killer.

Today I'm thankful for: friends. family. my wonderful dad (happy father's day!)
Toady I'm drinking: coconut creme iced tea. YUM.
Today I'm listening to: Fleet Foxes
Today I'm: GOING TO BED EARLY.

that time I saw...| the new hawk nelson

Do you have a band you love no matter what? Regardless of style changes, member changers, whatever? Mine is Hawk Nelson. They're kind of my guilty pleasure when it comes to music. My friends and I started listening to them when were about thirteen or so. (Has it really been seven years? Goodness.) If there was a concert anywhere near us, we'd be there. We quoted their songs, watched their music videos, and sang their songs as loud as we could. It's pretty safe to say we were obsessed. I even have this gem of a video:

(yes. that really happened. yes, I was that awkward. i was fifteen. you can't hold it against me!)

My musical tastes are much different than they were seven years ago. I'm not a screaming fangirl anymore. But when I found out about the show debuting the New Hawk Nelson, I had to be there.

Photobucket The show took place at 12th and Porter, a small bar near downtown Nashville. The guys hung out with the dedicated fans and friends who showed up early. I'm shy, so I didn't talk to them. Ya know. They finally took the stage around 5:30. My friend John Palmer and I were skeptical. Could they really be as good as they used to be, with their old lead singer gone? In a word...YES. They're much more...poppy...than they used to be. It was all I could do not to DANCE. (But this is Nashville, and you have to act aloof at shows. Since I'm not a native, I figured I was allowed to move my feet.)

I scared off some kid to get the really close up photos. I gave him the "my-canon-is-bigger-than-your-canon" look. It worked.

Thanks for letting me be a total embarrassing fangirl for a few minutes. ;)

short hair don't care?

I really can't believe I went six months without a haircut. That's probably nothing to you long-haired gals, but those with short hair will understand. Short hair loses its shape so quickly. It's less maintenance on a day-to-day basis, though.

Photobucket

I was stuck between growing my hair out and chopping it into a pixie again. I finally went with my old standby--the bob. My mom had my long, thick, tomboy hair cut into a bob when I was around eight or so. I've had short hair ever since, usually some variation of the bob. I really like this cut. A sweet girl from my church cut it, and did a fantastic job! My head feels so much lighter. Now I just have to wait for the sunburn on my head to heal and I can dye my hair. ;)

This is an awkward picture, but I wanted to share it. Though my eyes usually appear brown or black, they're actually amber colored. Fun stuff.

I hope your weekends are lovely! I'm headed to the mall to procrastinate. I have a paper due at midnight. ;)

gulf shores part two

And now, time for more beach photos. Friday night we ate some great seafood (if you're ever in Gulf Shores, eat at Sea n' Suds. It's great!) and played putt-putt.  We got up fairly early Saturday morning and met some of Mikaela's friends from Alabama. We laid on the beach, swam in the cool water, and rode a banana boat.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket (the above three photos were taken on my phone and edited using VSCOcam) After we cleaned up and got all the sand out of our hair, we went to The Happy Shack and got henna. By then we were starving so we got some food at The Hangout, which turned out to be a pretty cool place.

Sunday, we walked out on the pier and took some photos before heading back to Nashville. It was a lovely trip full of good friends, food, and books. We're hoping to take a trip out west to the Grand Canyon and the cliff dwellings next year :)

P.S. I have some film photos, too, but I have to wait for them to develop. ;)

gulf shores part one

Photobucket

This was my first real road trip without any adult supervision. Two of my friends from Missouri, Mikaela and Teagan, came to Nashville Thursday night. We packed the car up and attempted to get a few hours of sleep before we left at 4 am to drive to Gulf Shores, AL. An eight hour drive seems much longer when you're dying to feel the cool ocean water on your toes. Once we made it to the coast we grabbed some lunch at Waffle House and hit the beach. :)

I'll be back tomorrow with more ;)
